The recent Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Ice Bucket Challenge has undoubtedly created a social media phenomenon by flooding Facebook news and Twitter feeds with videos of people accepting the challenge of having ice water dumped on them or donating $100 to ALS.org. Many people have chosen to do both, and the ALS Foundation reports that donations from the Challenge have exceeded $88 million.

Hargrove Engineers + Constructors Leadership accepted the Ice Bucket Challenge and in turn challenged the entire Hargrove Team. The Hargrove Foundation agreed to a dollar-for-dollar match of all Hargrove Teammate donations to the ALS Foundation.

ALS, also known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed, according to the ALS website.
